Acquasparta is located in the Province of Terni in the Region of Umbria.
Brief History:
Its name derives from latin acquas partas (scattered waters) and relates to the abundance of water in the area. It sits between two hot springs, the Amerino and Furapane.
After hundreds of years of back-and-forth ownership of Emperors and Popes, in 1588, Pope Sixtus V declared Acuasparta as a duchy and pronounced Federico Cesi as its first duke. Federico’s son, Federico II known as il Linceo (the Astute), founded the Accademia dei Lincei (the Lincean Academy) in Rome in 1603. The aim of this Academy was to study the sciences of nature in an experimental way free from prejudice. It is still operating today and is one of the oldest and most prestigious European scientific institutions. Galileo Galilei was a member of the academy and, in 1624, was a guest of the ruling Cesi family in Acquasparta.
In 1798, the municipality of Acquasparta was created under the influence of the Roman Republic, and was a subject of the town of Spoleto. But with the fall of Napoleon, papal power was reaffirmed and took over from the Cesi family in 1800.
