Assisi is located in the Province of Perugia in the Region of Umbria. The city of San Francesco has a thousand-year history with important Roman, medieval and Renaissance remains. Giotto's construction site marked the art of all of central Italy.

Located in the central-eastern part of Umbria, Assisi lies on the slopes of Mount Subasio and dominates the plain crossed by the Topino and Chiascio rivers, tributaries of the Tiber.

The city, which was the birthplace of Saint Francis and Saint Clare, has attracted world attention as the universal center of the Franciscan message of peace and brotherhood.

Built with the typical "pink stone" of Subasio.

Brief History:

The Etruscans took over from the Umbrians, who founded Assisi. In the 1st century BC the city became an important Roman municipality. In 545 AD it was attacked and destroyed by Totila's Goths, who were replaced by the Lombards who included it in the territories of the Duchy of Spoleto.

In the 12th century it became a free municipality, but its independence did not last long: political and military instability continued until the 16th century when, after various rulers (Papato, Visconti, Braccio Fortebraccio and Francesco Sforza), Assisi entered being part of the Papal State under whose dominion, except for the Napoleonic period, it remained until 1860 with the birth of the Italian State.
